In the world of cycling, especially here in the punchy, relentless terrain of Northwest Arkansas, FTP is the metric that rules them all. We talk about it at the trailhead, obsess over it on our Zwift screens, and use it to define our "engine."

Physiologically, FTP is the highest power you can maintain without fatiguing. Traditionally, we’re told this is all about "lactate threshold," the point where your muscles can’t clear the burn fast enough.

I’ve experienced this neurological brake firsthand. I was at mile 99 of a 100-mile trail race. My body had been moving for nearly a day, fueled by Skratch, Precision Hydration, and aid station grilled cheese. I had one singular focus: the finish line. But the moment I saw my husband and dog approaching just around the bend, it was like someone pulled the shades down over my eyes.


My brain saw "safety" and immediately released its grip on my performance. It wasn't my legs that gave out; they had been moving for 99 miles (100.7 according to Strava). It was my nervous system shifting from Performance Mode to Safety Mode. My brain decided the mission was accomplished, and it was time to shut down the engine. I was on the ground for 45 minutes in a complete daze. I could no longer stand up, and that was the end of my race.
