The Neuroscience of the Long Game: Training for the 40+ Athlete

Running in Northwest Arkansas is about more than just miles on the Greenway or hills in Bella Vista; it’s about the relationship between the body and the brain.
As a coach with a background in neuroscience, I look at training through a slightly different lens. When we talk about "recovery" or "stamina" for a Masters athlete, we aren't just talking about muscles—we are talking about the nervous system. The Brain-Body Connection in Masters Running As we age, our "neuromuscular efficiency"—the speed and coordination with which the brain communicates with the muscles—naturally begins to shift. This is why a plan for an athlete over 40 shouldn't just be "hard work"; it needs to be neurologically smart. To maintain speed and prevent injury as the years go by, there are three scientific priorities I focus on:
Neuromuscular Power: We don't just run to build heart and lung capacity; we run (and lift) to keep the neural pathways to our "fast-twitch" muscle fibers open. This is what prevents the "Masters Shuffle" and keeps your stride snappy and responsive.
The Recovery Reflex: The central nervous system (CNS) requires more time to reset as we mature. By structuring a plan with strategic "rest-first" cycles, we ensure that the brain is sending clear, strong signals to the muscles, reducing the risk of the "clumsy" foot strikes that lead to trips and strains.
Proprioceptive Armor: Strength training is actually brain training. By doing specific stability movements, we are teaching the brain to better "map" the body’s position. This keeps our joints stable on the rolling hills of NWA and ensures our form remains efficient even in the final miles of a race.
